The app 112 BE is one of the possibilities to reach the emergency call centres if you need urgent help from the fire brigade, an ambulance and/or the police in Belgium.
The most important advantage of this app is that you do not have to remember the emergency numbers and therefore cannot forget them if you're in distress. You just tap the ambulance, firefighter or police icon depending on what kind of help you need.

Naturally you can still contact the emergency services by calling them through a land line or cellphone.

Thanks to this app, it will be much easier for the emergency call centers to localize your position.  When you're in a remote place, in the middle of the woods or at a complex interchange, it is often hard to explain where you are. The app sends your position to the emergency call center as soon as you call and then sends an update of your position every 30 seconds.  This way, the app can save valuable time. If you have called the emergency call centers and you no longer respond, the emergency call centers will ring your smartphone so that the emergency services can find and help you more easily.

The 112 BE app is an important means to pinpoint the location, but the operator will also always verify the location. It is indeed possible that someone is calling from another location to report an emergency (for instance a son or daughter phoning on behalf of his or her mother who lives elsewhere and who has let him/her know that she is feeling unwell). So do not be surprised when the operator asks you to confirm the address he or she sees on screen as the place for which the rescue services shall be setting out.

Chat function

Deaf persons, hearing-impaired persons or persons with speech disabilities can easily indicate in the app that they cannot make a phone call. They can communicate with the emergency call centers using messages.

If you are not deaf or hearing-impaired and you do not have a speech disorder, the emergency call center will only exceptionally activate the chat function if the operator cannot understand the caller. This could be the case if there is too much background noise or if the caller does not speak any of the national languages or English.  Messages in another language are automatically translated for the operator and vice versa.  However, sending messages will take longer than talking and the operator cannot, for example, give instructions as easily on how to perform CPR if necessary.

Additional information

Besides the applications mentioned above, the registration on the app also entails a number of other advantages.  You can provide certain medical information, such as heart problems, allergies (to medication), epilepsy, diabetes... The operator has this information even before you have said something and can give this information to the emergency services.

Download and register

With a good internet connection it only takes 112 seconds to download and install the app on your smartphone and to register yourself on the app. To do so, go to the app store or play store on your smartphone, enter "app 112 BE" as your search query and download the app. After installing the app, it is best to put it immediately on the home screen of your smartphone so that you can easily find it when you are in need.  After that, you only have to register. This registration only consists of 2 screens with a number of short questions.
We sincerely hope that you will never need the app, but do register yourself so you can contact the emergency call centers using the app when you, your family or your friends need urgent assistance.

Attention: the 112-app only works in Belgium.
